'Games People Play: Paintings by Esteban Ocampo'
"Games People Play" will open on Monday, February 1st from 7 – 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Bay Ridge Arts Space will feature the work of Colombian painter Esteban Ocampo in a solo show during the month of February. Called "Games People Play," the exhibition will feature large- and small-scale works made by Ocampo during his three years living in New York City.
Soccer games, beach houses, Sunday morning routines, and school recess.... Ocampo paints an idea: the feeling of repeated experience. Ocampo's paintings synthesize repeated memories into single images that range from humorous to profound, as he playfully blends figuration, decoration, and abstraction in color-driven tableaux. "I recreate my memories as they feel and look inside my head. My paintings can’t be placed in a particular day, month or year of my life, nor can they be understood as a literal, recognizable moment," Ocampo explained.
"Since I moved to New York in 2013, I have come to deeply appreciate my South American and Colombian upbringing. Through painting, I integrate memory, experience and imagination into work that recognizes the humor, connection and loss in everyday life. "
Ocampo, 27, is currently a Chubb Fellow at the New York Academy of Art, from which he received his MFA in painting in 2015.
